The electrode is then clamped into the electrode holder and brought close to the workpiece. When the electrode is touched against the base metal, an electric arc is created, heating the electrode and the base metal to their melting points. As the metals melt, the electrode's flux coating releases gases to protect the molten metal from atmospheric contamination.

With the molten metal pool created, the welder moves the electrode along the joint line, depositing the molten metal into the weld bead. The welder maintains a suitable arc length and travel speed to ensure proper penetration and fusion of the metals. The process continues until the desired length of the weld is achieved.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Arc Welding

Arc welding offers several advantages over other welding processes. It is a versatile process that can be used to weld various metals and alloys, including carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and cast iron. Arc welding equipment is also relatively affordable and portable, making it suitable for on-site repairs and construction projects.

However, arc welding also has its disadvantages. The process produces a considerable amount of smoke, fumes, and spatter, which can be hazardous to the welder's health if proper protective measures are not taken. The quality of the welds produced by arc welding may also be lower compared to other processes, as it requires manual skills and precision. Additionally, arc welding is not suitable for all materials, such as thin sheets or materials that are highly reactive to atmospheric gases.
